The Embryonic Stem Cell Debate

Embryonic stem cells ARE NOT the same as cord blood stem cells. Cord blood stem cells require a new life. Embryonic stem cells come from aborted fetuses and leftover, donated embryos and this is why there is controversy over using federal money for stem cell research..

What we know for sure is that umbilical cord blood stem cells do not present the same ethical or moral issues as embryonic stem cells and most agree that these stem cells are the closest to embryonic stem cells that are safely available for research and treating diseases.

Also, in comparison to stem cells taken from bone marrow, cord blood stem cells are considered more immature and therefore more tolerant. Studies have shown cord blood stem cells are more resistant to infection and more effective in the treatment of disease than bone marrow.

The Cord Blood Donor Foundation is actively involved in research collaborations using our pool of research samples of cord blood stem cells. To financially support our efforts, please go to our "How Can I Help" page to submit a donation.
